Discovery's Final Landing

Taken on April 17, 2012, when the space shuttle Discovery arrived at Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, VA.  It will be on permanent exhibit at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum.

The best view was probably here, on top of the tower at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center. One of two chase planes accompanying the shuttle. Space shuttle Discovery arrives with a chase plane escort. This ship has been through a lot! On its second pass overhead, the landing gear came down. Side view with landing gear down. Coming in for its final landing. Pulling into the airport. The crowds disperse. Loudoun County's new baseball team mascot can't resist a little self-promotion. The congestion on Rt. 28 afterwards.
